Sonya and the Madman - سونيا والمجنون

Two of Egypt's most celebrated performers, Naglaa Fathi and Mahmoud Yassine, star together in this adaptation of Dostoevsky’s Crime & Punishment. Tracking closely the narrative of the classic novel, Yassine movingly portrays a young, educated man amid a descent into madness and paranoia after he commits a crime. Fathi marvelously portrays a kind-hearted prostitute who comforts the man and, ultimately, helps redeem him.

The poster for this film is a full-color painting by esteemed poster artist Gassour, who captures in Yassine's and Fathi's faces the gripping drama and poignant sorrow of the story. The haunted characters, dark colors and inchoate, tempestuous background sample the artistic style of German Expressionism and provide a window into the emotional turmoil of the story.
